Mexican security forces have arrested the regional leader of the notorious Gulf Cartel criminal gang, who is wanted for violence in the crime-plagued northern city of Monterrey.
The police authorities said on Sunday that the villain -- David Rosales Guzman who operated under the alias "Devil Commander" -- was stopped by police on September 1, when an officer identified him as the regional chief for the Gulf Cartel, Reuters reported.
The head of the regional security for the Mexican Federal Police, Luis Cardenas Palomino, said federal police closed in on Rosales Guzman in the city of Guadalupe in Nuevo Leon state.
"The incidents were registered in the vicinity of Colonia Independiente in Guadalupe in Nuevo Leon, when elements of the Federal Police located David Rosales on board a vehicle. Upon seeing authorities he attempted to open fire and was arrested. This action followed the killings and attacks in recent days in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon," Cardenas Palomino stated.
Rosales Guzman is believed to be responsible for multiple murders, extortion and attacks.
He is known for having some of his victims hung from bridges in busy parts of cities --amongst them the murder of two men who were hanging from a bridge between Monterrey and San Nicolas de los Garza on August 8, and bar attacks -- including the homicide of three people at the Maquiavelo bar on August 8.
Drug violence has reportedly killed more than 50,000 people since outgoing President Felipe Calderon launched an offensive against Mexico's cartels, when he took office in December 2006.
